I make objects out of craft supplies which function as paintings. Googly eyes, glitter, pipecleaners, pom poms, rhinestones, and studs are arranged in forms like grids, targets, explosions, monochromes, all-over-compositions, voids. I concentrate on the physical properties of the materials and let those fundamental attributes dictate the form of the piece. This process-based method of working does not exclude the cultural associations of my materials. I work to cultivate the complexity that arises as a result of the gap between the forms I arrange these materials within and the forms and places we are accustomed to seeing them. |
